Come check out Straw Hat Society competing in Round 1 of the 2015 Shiner Rising Star competition this Thursday night at Love and War [Grapevine] from 8-10pm!

Straw Hat Society based in Dallas, Texas and hailing from Paris – Texas that is – consists of Rags O’Hooligan (singer/guitarist), Meaux Goudeau (banjo/harmonica), Waylon Whitaker (guitar) and Rodney Key (upright bass). Their sound could be called many things…freaky folk, newgrass, ragtime, old time…Whatever the label it is original but readily identifiable as based on the old time traditional string band music. Full of energy and enthusiasm, four guys from the country, this is Straw Hat Society.

Citing inspiration from John Prine, to the Rolling Stones, Woody and Arlo Guthrie (Rags’ son Sid even bears the middle name “Guthrie” after these folk greats) to Chris Robinson and many talented local musicians they also count as friends – their influences are as varied as their music.

The band recently recorded their debut album with all songs written by Rags O’Hooligan. Stay tuned for more information on their album release tour. And, if you are lucky, maybe you can even pick up an advance copy at the show!
